A Culture of Harassment in the State of Ohio?

June 5, 2008

From the Dispatch:

At least four Franklin County deputies have made working at the Jackson Pike jail intolerable for their subordinates, an internal-affairs investigation has found.

The four men work together on second shift. They are variously accused of hurling insults and office furnishings, sexually harassing female deputies and coercing new recruits into demeaning behavior, offenses that are grounds for suspension or dismissal, the investigators said.

Is this sounding familiar to anyone else?  It seems like day after day you open the paper and some governmental entity in Ohio is getting caught harassing its employees.

The second-highest-ranking, Sgt. Matthew Worthington, 35, was suspended with pay last month after he was found to be intimidating subordinates who were cooperating with the investigation against him, which includes charges of sexual harassment.

The other two, Cpl. Charles Davis, 34, and Deputy Mickey Casper, 29, were among those who coerced new recruits into playing leapfrog and acting out the songs I’m a Little Teapot and Ring around the Rosie in the Franklin County jail in front of at least 15 people, including supervisors, civilians and an inmate. Gunn and Worthington also participated, the investigation says.

That is quite a punishment, isn’t it?  Suspended with pay = a free vacation.

The Fraternal Order of Police will represent the accused deputies, Jim Gilbert, president of FOP Capital City Lodge No. 9, said.

Very disappointing with regards to the Fraternal Order of Police.  Why must we always protect our own?

It’s time for the citizens of the state of Ohio to get sufficiently angry with these groups of people and demand that they clean house.  Sexual harassment is a very serious offense, no matter what some men might tell you.

Can Having a C-Section Make You Dangerous To Insure?

June 1, 2008

The Columbus Dispatch has an article in today’s paper about a woman that was denied insurance by Golden Rule Insurance Company because she had given birth through a C-Section.

She was turned down because she had given birth by Caesarean section. Having the operation once increases the odds that it will be performed again, and if she became pregnant and needed another Caesarean, Golden Rule did not want to pay for it. A letter from the company explained that if she had been sterilized after the Caesarean, or if she were older than 40 and had given birth two or more years before applying, she might have qualified for coverage.

Robertson had been shopping for a better rate on individual health insurance. After being rejected by Golden Rule, she kept her existing coverage.

This is simply unbelievable.  What would these insurance companies prefer, killing the baby or mother?  In my mind, this is more reason for the government to get involved in health care.

GOP asks for probe of Dann, workers

May 4, 2008

The Dispatch has an interesting article this morning about the GOP calling for a probe of Attorney General Marc Dann.

A Republican state lawmaker yesterday called for a special prosecutor to investigate allegations in the scandal rocking Democratic Attorney General Marc Dann’s office, including the suggestion that Dann might have committed perjury.

If you have been following my posts on this site, you already know that I have been vocal about the democratic party and its lack of cojones in calling for Marc Dann to resign.

I congratulate State Rep. Kevin Bacon of Minerva Park for taking the lead on this issue.  My hope is that this does not turn into a partisan fight as Dann continues to hurt our party.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

April 30, 2008

He’s back and perhaps more controversial than ever!  Who am I talking about?  Yes, our good buddy Rev. Jeremiah Wright.  If you have been following the news at all, you’ve probably heard him rehash his old anti-American sermons?  Personally, I’m getting sick of hearing what an important theologian this man is.  Give me a break.  Who decided that he was so important?

In all honesty, does it matter how much you have done or given to your community when you say things that he was videotaped saying?  Doesn’t that just kind of destroy all credibility?  Is it really a sermon to have a man behind a pulpit when he is ranting and raving and not really preaching the word of God?  I wonder.

According to George Will:

He is a demagogue with whom Obama has had a voluntary 20-year relationship. It has involved, if not moral approval, certainly no serious disapproval. Wright also is an ongoing fountain of anti-American and, properly understood, anti-black rubbish. His speech yesterday demonstrated that he wants to be a central figure in this presidential campaign. He should be.

We’ve seen that Wright doesn’t plan on fading into the background.  Perhaps he wishes to host his own form of reality TV.  But what is important is the fact that Obama voluntarily sat in that church pew week after week and wasn’t bothered enough to leave the church.  It doesn’t matter at this point if he castigates Wright and rejects him because his actions are stronger than his words!

Memo to Attorney General Dann: Time To Resign!

April 27, 2008

The Columbus Dispatch has chronicled the saga of Attorney General Mark Dann. It now includes all of the elements of a juicy novel including sexual harassment, drinking, a loose working environment, and a lack of professionalism that runs abound in his office.

According to the Dispatch:

Interviews with current and former employees of Dann’s, as well as hundreds of e-mail messages released last week and the sexual-harassment complaints, point to a casual work environment that often extends into alcohol-lubricated evenings in which work and personal lives blur.

He is turning out to be a real embarrassment to the state of Ohio and should really consider resigning!  Unethical behavior is running rampant under his administration of that office.

Rev. Jeremiah Wright Is Back!

April 25, 2008

The spiritual adviser of Senator Barack Obama is back in the news.  Its like Christmas time for the Republicans.  This man cannot keep his mouth shut and brings it back into the news yet again.  I must admit, that is where it should be.  Obama has not answered this question satisfactorily and this will continue to haunt him and affect his campaign for as long as it lasts.

According to Wright:

“I don’t talk to him about politics,” Wright said. “And so he had a political event, he goes out as a politician and says what he has to say as a politician. I continue to be a pastor who speaks to the people of God about the things of God.”

He is right about one thing.  Obama is merely a politician and says what is politically most beneficial to him.  All of this talk about transcending politics as normal is laughable.

Teenagers Bearing It All On Their Cell Phones

April 15, 2008

A recent Columbus Dispatch article really disturbed me when it was published this weekend.  What kind of culture are we living in when our children are taking the devices that their parents buy/give to them and performing such lewd acts and then sending them to their friends and/or acquaintances?  It is repulsive that our children are doing these things.

What might be even worse is the question of Where Are the Parents?  I don’t have children, but if I did, I can guarantee that I would be going through my kids cell phone on a very regular basis to check to see who they are calling and what types of messages they are sending.  But one thing I don’t understand is WHY do kids have to have a texting plan?  They don’t need it!  Isn’t the purpose of giving a child a cell phone to be able to call them if there is an emergency?  Do you really need to be texting your kids messages when they should be focused on their studies in school?  Should you really be spending your productive time at work texting with your kid that you many times you can’t find time to have dinner with in the evening?

The last thought I had was the sexist point of view of the article.  I find it very hard to believe that this is mostly a girl phenomena.  Come on….boys aren’t always angels….

Randi Rhodes Forced Out

April 13, 2008

I’ve been busy lately and not quick to post as usual, but had been watching this story.

On air talent Randi Rhodes was first suspended for making her degrading comments about two pioneering women, Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton.  The vulgar language that she used to malign these two women was both insulting and indicative of the the type of “talent” that she claims to have.

Air America has traditionally had very bad ratings and has not been a serious threat to right-wing talk radio.  I think that for this reason, among others, many commentators and bloggers have largely ignored this issue.  The extent to which Rhodes has any influence is negligible at best.

Jill at Writes Like She Talks has a very good post on this subject and asks the question as to why the Ohio blogosphere has been silent on this issue.  I think she makes an excellent point and I have been guilty myself.

Another question that I will add is this…How would bloggers have reacted had it been a similar comment about Obama?

The Fat Lady Hasn’t Sung

April 13, 2008

Ben Keeler over at The Point has excellent analysis of the latest Obama gaffe when talking about Pennsylvania voters that cling to religion, guns, and racism when they lose their jobs.  Obama’s argument is ludicrous.

I think that this is yet further evidence that Senator Clinton can take to the superdelegates arguing that she is more electable in a general election.  Don’t you agree?

Trinity Church of Christ Fights Back

March 24, 2008

According to an article by the associated press, the reverand at Barack Obama’s church made the following statement during Easter services:

“Any time you go through a crucifixion experience … eventually they have to lift you up,” said the Rev. Otis Moss III, who did not shy away from the controversy surrounding his predecessor at Trinity United Church of Christ, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

I venture to say that I am not the only voter that believes that this church is doing Obama no favor by making an analogy of itself to Christ on the most holy of Christian holidays in the Church calendar.  To call the criticisms of Rev. Wright a crucifixion is not only in bad taste, but is inflammatory.

Do you think that because Obama did not attend the Easter service that he does not have to respond to this controversy?
