Transparency? I think not!

by Jason on December 16, 2009

As a person who worries about the welfare of others, I believe that health care reform is of the utmost importance.  There are far too many people in our country that do not have the means to seek basic health care.  That is wrong, and in my point, immoral.  In a country like ours, every person should be afforded the opportunity to seek basic health care and preventative care.  Why not allow a woman to find out early through an inexpensive mammogram that they have a tumor rather than waiting and being forced to go through a mastectomy, or even face death?

I am not, however, ready to jump on board of the health care plan created by the House and Senate leadership.  Candidate Obama promised that a health care bill would be crafted under the scrutiny of the American people.  This was to be attained with the help of C-SPAN.  As we all know, this has unfortunately been an extremely secretive process. This is very unfortunate.  This is a topic on which there should be agreement between the parties.  The democrats should not try to pass this bill with a party line vote and do exactly what they blamed the republicans of … ignoring the minority.

Happy Holidays?

by Jason on December 16, 2009

I am someone that believes in saying “Merry Christmas.”  Why is that phrase so offensive to some?  Does it bother you to be wished a Merry Christmas if you are not a Christian?  Would it bother me to be wished a Happy Hanuka?  Not at all!  I’d say thank you and be on my way.  Personally I would rather be wished something than nothing at all.

For me, as a Christian, it bothers me much more the commercialization of this holy holiday.  As the second most important day in our liturgical calendar, I wish more of us focused on the meaning of the day rather than whether or not you get that new flat screen TV or the new Lexus in the driveway with a red bow around it (although that wouldn’t be too bad).

When asked what I want for Christmas, my answer generally is a donation to a charity or going to a store and picking the name of a needy child off a Christmas tree and shopping for her/him.  I already have what I need and thankfully have the means to purchase most of what I don’t.

I do not bemoan the idea of giving gifts for Christmas.  It is, after all, symbolic of the Magi bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.  As long as we keep things in focus, that is fantastic.

When asked what you want for Christmas, try suggesting a donation to a charity.  Think about those less fortunate that may not even have a winter coat to keep them warm.  And above all, remember why we celebrate Christmas.

To all of you out there: Merry Christmas, Happy Hanuka, or Happy Festivus!  May your holiday season be filled with time spent with those you love.
