I’m in Charleston, West Virginia watching my favorite OU Bobcats play against Marshall University and unfortunately we are down at this point in the game so I thought I would try to submit a post to my blog from my blackberry storm for the first time. So far it is pretty easy. I’m surprised because the storm is one of the worst phones on the market. Well back to the game.

Last night my wife and I decided that we would go to the movies and see the much anticipated 2012 from Sony Pictures. To begin with, having studied Spanish in an area of Mexico that is heavily-influenced by the Maya, present-day and historically, I am always interested in reading and watching documentaries about these fascinating people. But let me warn you…this movie is NOT about the Maya.
From what I recall from the movie, the Maya were referenced very little. This, in my opinion, was a major disappointment. The movie seems to be marketed as a dooms-day scenario based on what might happen on December 12, 2012 based on predictions made from the ancient Mayan calendar. Although I don’t buy into all of the hype that Hollywood is trying to throw our way regarding these predictions, I still find it rather interesting. Did the Maya believe that the world was going to end on this date? I’ve not seen evidence that this was their prediction. Yet Hollywood keeps propagating this myth that the Maya predicted this huge apocalypse in the year 2012.
What is the true plot behind this movie? It is a nearly three hour movie full of unrealistic plot twists that have the movie-goer thinking, “yeah right.” The movie is so “Hollywood” and farcical that it truly feels like it will never end. Very few times have I gone to the theater and contemplated leaving early. In fact, there were other patrons that did get up and leave.
So, if you want to see a movie with cool, yet unrealistic special effects, this is the film for you. But be prepared to sit through a movie that drags far too long; one that you will leave and say that it could have been completed in one hour, rather than nearly 3.5 hours. If you want to see a film that is marketed as something based on historical fact, yet that detail is virtually unexplored, than this is the movie for you. Be prepared to take your blackberries and cell phones so you can at least have something to do while this movie, with its unrealistic plot line and ridiculous governmental response to the “end of the world” keeps you in the movie theater far too long.
It is one of those movies where you leave feeling cheated for having spent so much money to go and see it and realizing that you will never get those 3.5 hours of your life back.

The President never fails to give us a good laugh. Do you think this quote was mistyped on his infamous teleprompter: “And of course, I could not come here without sending my greetings and gratitude to the citizens of Obama, Japan.” Bad teleprompter!

My wife and I are so excited to be seeing Gov. Sarah Palin for a second time. A major reason for our votes for the McCain team last election cycle was a vote in support of Sarah Palin. Not only did she energize many republicans, but also energized many disaffected Clinton supporters, like myself, that were very disappointed with the primary election. In fact, at a Sarah Palin rally in St. Clairsville, Ohio, we met a woman from West Virginia that was a democrat and she told us, “the democratic party left me, I did not leave it.” That sums up the sentiment that many of us feel.
We were extremely excited to find out that Governor Palin will be in Columbus at the Borders Bookstore on Sawmill Road this Friday. We have already pre-ordered the bestseller “Going Rogue: An American Life“ and can’t wait to read it!
