You knew that it was only a matter of time before Ohio would somehow find a way to link itself to this whole swine flu fiasco. The Dispatch reports that we have a confirmed case in Ohio. The case is apparently in Lorain County. Of course any time that a human being falls ill, it is not something to laugh about.
We should wish this person nothing but the best and for a full, speedy, and healthy recovery. But I have to wonder how long it will take for the anti-immigration nut jobs to come out and curse all of the Mexicans for this.
Governments around the world have issued travel advisories urging people not to visit Mexico, the apparent origin of the outbreak.

This is just a quick shout-out to my buddy Jill Miller Zimon who is putting her money where her mouth is. Is that the saying? I’ve been doing yard work all day and I think the sun fried my brain a little. Anyhow, I am thrilled that Jill, from Writes Like She Talks, is running for the city council of her town Pepper Pike. So many people love to complain about the job that others are doing, but Jill is doing something about it. I wish her much success.

I admit that I am a big waffler on the death penalty debate. Growing up I was always hard core law and order and thought that no mercy should be shown those individuals that perform such brutal acts on others. This article from the Dispatch seems to qualify in that area.
The Ohio Supreme Court has set a September execution date for a man who raped and stabbed a 14-year-old girl more than two decades ago.
The court ruled 6-1 Wednesday that Romell Broom of Cleveland should be put to death Sept. 15 for the death of Tryna Middleton.
Broom was convicted of abducting the girl at knifepoint on Sept. 21, 1984, raping her and stabbing her seven times.
It is hard for me to say that someone that commits such horrible acts of violence deserves mercy from the rest of us. But I also know that it is not up to me to be the ultimate decider of what is just and what is not. Is it better to leave someone in jail to rot for the rest of their lives, or is it better to make them pay the ultimate price?

This is a really great subject I think and something that I have spent a little bit of time pondering. My wife and I like to watch Suze Orman and since the first time that I heard her address this topic, I thought that maybe this could be discriminatory. I think that most people realize that it is extremely important to pay your bills on time. This is a lesson that many learn while in college when they are living on their credit cards in the hopes of paying that thousands of dollars in debt back once they land their first “real job.”
But in the economic climate that we find ourselves in, it just isn’t the college kids that are running up massive amounts of debt. What about your neighbors that got down-sized or lost a signifcant portion of their monthly income?
Is it fair for a company to pull your FICO scores or credit reports when decided whether or not to offer you employment? Does it make you a risk if you happen to have a lower FICO score? Would having a lower score affect the quality of work that you would offer a company? An Ohio legislator says No.
According to the Dispatch:
Sen. Ray Miller said he introduced legislation declaring it discriminatory to use a person’s credit rating in relation to his or her employment after two constituents were fired from the Defense Supply Center Columbus because of their credit history.
“This issue is particularly discriminatory for young people who are just starting out in the job market,” Miller said. “They are in a tough economy with more student loan debt than has ever been experienced before. We need to be aware of how society is changing.”
Miller also said that making hiring decisions based on credit history is counterproductive because it inhibits a person’s ability to correct debt and credit issues. The bill would make it a discriminatory practice to use credit history in hiring or tenure decisions of determining conditions or privileges of employment.
Senate Bill 91 will remedy that situation. In my opinion, if the job that you seek has nothing to do with money management, then forget about the credit history.
