Columbus Imposes Stricter Curfew Laws

June 1, 2008

The Dispatch tells us about the new stepped up efforts by the city of Columbus to keep kids off the streets.

Details of the city’s stepped-up curfew enforcement:

Better be home: 13- to 17-year-olds must be in by midnight. Children younger than 13 must be indoors by an hour after sundown. Curfew enforcement will begin Thursday and last through Aug. 24 on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Exceptions: Children accompanied by a parent or guardian aren’t subject to the curfew. Those going to or from work, on a family emergency, or heading home from a late movie they saw with parental permission won’t be taken to the curfew center.

Penalties: Children picked up by police will be taken to the Downtown YMCA and held until their parents get them. After the first violation, children and parents will have to attend a three-hour lesson offered by the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Consortium. A second violation could require community service for the child. A third could bring misdemeanor charges against kids and parents.

• Turn them in: To report a child violating the Columbus curfew, call 614-645-4545 starting Thursday.

What are curfew laws like in your city and how do you think it affects your area?

I think if children are 13 or younger then they should be allowed to stay out till 10 o’clock and any one older 11

Haley - Thanks for the comment. I tend to agree.

I just got inside and i’m only eight years old, look at the time. It’s my god given right!

Next time you might end up at an overnighter at the YMCA.

I don’t think 17 years old should be subjected to the midnight curfew. They’re just about legal adults and any adult just as a near adult can commit crimes or obey the law.

Andrew - I don’t understand your logic at all. If they are committing crimes, shouldn’t they be punished? 17 is still not 18. Thanks for the comment!

Hi. I’m Sarah, I’m seventeen, and think it’s slightly humorous that poeple, whether they are my age or younger, are taking this so seriously. Let’s be honest, if a child up to the age of seventeen wants to go out and do something and has the means, they will be out there. The law is obviously a scare tactic. Which is fine. I think what Andrew was assuming was that the law was put in place to keep teenagers from committing crimes, which is partly true. It’s also to protect those of us who are incapable of making good desisions. It’s for your own good, especially if you’re fourteen or younger. Just stay in :)

Sarah- you make a great point. Some can’t make good decisions. Why do you need to be out so late anyway?

heres my question what possible “good” can you be doing after midnight, at any age? A curfew is a good idea in my book, there is always something we could be doing constructive, like i dunno creating cheap effcient fuel or a cure for cancer… ok so these may be extreme, but seriously we have too many deliquents running around

  13. Jason Rowsey on August 3rd, 2008 12:34 am

Dan is exactly right. There is no reason to be out that late . Where are the parents?

I dont believe the curfew was put in action for a good reason, I am saying this because we as teenagers want to have fun and there are teen clubs that are out, especially for the summer times. Yes most teens are not on the right path, but thats only because they dont have people who love them and want to help them in the world, and when I was watching the news, I can recall that the mayor was puting millions on this “project” which is a waste of money.

Got something to say?
