Dispatch Columnist Anne Fisher Characterizes Attorney General Marc Dann

May 11, 2008

He still seems unwilling to resign and we still are keeping the pressure on him to do so.  In her blog, Ann Fisher describes Dann:

Dann is not stupid. He’s arrogant, rude and unrepentant. I’ve previously characterized him as a petulant little troll and a blustering bully. He’s a dangerous man because he has no respect for anybody or anything other than himself. He believes that he is above the law. Stupidity is often forgiveable because stupid people often mean well but they screw up anyway. Dann doesn’t mean well. Stupid is what Marc Dann made of the people who voted for him.

I don’t think that any of us could say it any better!

I can say it better - a lot better. Ms. Fisher and Rowsey are all part of a mob mentality. Try reading Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.”
Maybe, just maybe, it will cause you to think.

There are several interpretations of “The Lottery.” If you are trying to draw an analogy to Marc Dann as someone being accused by the public unfairly and being forced out of his job (community), I see your point but disagree.

He does deserve a fair trial if it comes to that. But politicians must be held to higher standards. If he becomes ineffective in his job, he is not serving the people of Ohio and should thus resign.

    Thanks for the comment!

As you say, “He does deserve a fair trial if it comes to that. But politicians must be held to higher standards. If he becomes ineffective in his job, he is not serving the people of Ohio and should thus resign.”

That’s my point, exactly: His effectiveness in his job can only be judged by permitting him to stay on and perform the job.

There may have been several interpretations of Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery.” But, as Jackson herself pointed out, she was writing about the public’s “mob mentality” and need to punish and convict without due process and without facts.

The ad-hominem attack by Anne Fisher is both unforgivable and beyond understanding. Whether she liked Dann or not, is irrelevant. Whether she ever got to really know Dann as a person, is highly unlikely. She shows more than poor judgment in her attack on Dann. A “Me, too” attitude without new information, is nothing more than pandering to her readers and an attempt to “be on the side of the angels.”
In this instance, Ms Fisher is doing the work of the devil. And, as far as I”m concerned, that’s where she can go.

[...] Jason Rowsey gives Ann Fisher a boost, rightly so, when she says, Dann is not stupid. He’s arrogant, rude and unrepentant.
