West Virginia Democrats Poised to Vote on Tuesday
May 9, 2008
Many of you may not know that I grew up in West Virginia. As a young boy we were told that the whole world was ahead of us and that all we needed to do was to dream. If you don’t know many people from West Virginia, you may not know that once you are a Mountaineer, it is always in your heart.
The great people of the Mountain State have the chance this Tuesday to make history and deliver a decisive win for Hillary Clinton. Even though the mainstream media has been bombarding us with the message that this election is over, that we need to move beyond the primary battle and focus on the general election, we know that we can send the message on Tuesday that Barack Obama does not speak for all of us and that he does not possess the same virtues that make the people of West Virginia so great.
Mine is a familiar story that mirrors so many young people from the state of West Virginia. After graduating college, the job market was bleak. Eventually I had to leave West Virginia to be able to secure a job, but not before having tried to find employment throughout the state.
As West Virginians, we know that for the last seven years, President Bush has given tax breaks to the wealthy, protected the oil and drug companies, and encouraged companies to leave this country and take our jobs overseas. The economy of our great state and country is hurting and President Bush has failed to take decisive action.
It is time to choose a president that will look after the average citizen that does not make enough money to enjoy the Bush tax cuts. If you look at the economy the promises of these tax policies have not come to fruition. Actually, quite the opposite has happened. Giving tax breaks to the wealthy was supposed to create more jobs for Americans. Well, all we need to do is look around and talk to our neighbors to find out that his policies failed miserably.
Too many West Virginians are living pay check to pay check, and with the rising gas prices, often don’t have enough at the end of the month to make it through. Many don’t have the insurance to be able to afford the health care that they deserve. Many are losing their homes to foreclosures, yet we read in our papers that President Bush is going to veto the help that Congress wants to pass.
It is long overdue for the people of West Virginia, and the people of this country, to have a president that fights and stands up for us. Hillary Clinton has a proven track record of working hard for all of us in issues like health care, children’s rights, and making sure that veterans have the health care that they so deserve.
This Tuesday, West Virginia has the opportunity to send the message to the national democratic party that we don’t want this primary to end until all of our voices have been heard. I urge you to go to the polls and let Hillary know that we want her to keep fighting for us. Send the message that we aren’t happy with Barack Obama. Call your friends and relatives and make sure that they can get to the polls. Every vote counts!

Didn’t know we were fellow Mountaineers (or maybe I did and the Mad Cow is catching up with me). I was born in Charleston and lived in the Kanawha (actually Elk) Valley through high school (Hoover Class of ‘71).
I once stood by the side of the road at the foot of Airport Hill (a term one would hear only in WV) with my Dad in our Boy Scout uniforms to watch the JFK motorcade when he came to town to thank the people of WV for pushing him over the top in the 1960 campaign. We were pretty much all alone on that stretch of road, and so it was a thrill when he rolled down the window and waved to us.
I sure would like to have that feeling again - to have a President in the White House that made me proud. History doesn’t necessarily paint JFK as a great President. But I remembered what it felt like in those days - and it was good; full of promise.
Maybe we know too much about our politicians these days. Maybe you can’t rise to the national stage without selling your soul. They just all fall short of my expectations.
I truly don’t know who I’m going to vote for. Pretty sure it won’t be Hillary though.
Mountani Siempre Libre
It will be interesting to see how much Hillary wins by. I think some of her vote could be depressed after the media spin from the other night. I think she will get at least 65%, which is a big win - if Obama got that much they would go crazy.
Paul - I grew up in South Hills in Charleston. After high school, I went to college at Ohio University. Now I know why you make such good arguments, being a mountaineer and all. It’s a small world and there are a lot of West Virginia transplants in the Columbus area.
Ben - My guess would be that they will do what they have done since the beginning of this campaign and we will see how none of this really matters because their deity Obama is still going to win.
Although I (an African American) don’t live in W.V. never have and I never will. My family visisted once a while ago and BELIEVE ME it’s NOT a state friendly to BLACK PEOPLE. If ANYONE say’s anything other than…They are lieing. The media knows about W.V., it’s horrible history and reasons it’s about to what it’s going to do tomorrow. Hillary will win and to no surprise or hoopla no body cares becuase of the hearts, minds and attitudes of the people who live there and want to keep racial lines in America long and deep. But to you all (sadly though) it’s as simple as “black and white.”
Obama 308 - What a great representation of your candidate! Should we blame racism on every loss that Obama has suffered? Just some of the bigger ones: Ohio, Texas, New York, California, Pennsylvania and there are many more. It looks like the whole country must be full of racists then, not just the state of WV.
Its very sad that every time Obama loses, some of his proponents blame it on racism.
Unfortunately, racism exists all over the world. You’re very wrong when you make your false characterizations about WV just because you went there once a long time ago.
Clinton will win tomorrow because she cares about the middle class worker and the poor. She will fight for them.
I did not vote for Obama not because I am racist, but because he has ZERO experience. The choice is very clear.
If you want to spout your prejudices, go find another blog because they aren’t welcome here. If you want to genuinely discuss the important issues, then stick around we’d love to have you.
South Hills - makes you a GWHS grad? My brother-in-law was on the faculty, and later administration there (got his job after the band director was caught robbing banks during his lunch hour).
If he were still alive, I wonder how my Dad would vote in the primary. He was a big-lever-pulling, straight-ticket Democrat kind of guy. Not an uneducated man either, although his time at Marshall was interrupted by WWII. Nonetheless, I think his head might explode having to make a choice between a woman and an African-American.
I’m pretty sure that if I were to vote in that primary, it would be for Obama. He seems to have that JFK potential to make us proud again. Hillary seems more like Nixon somehow - crafty old politician but not entirely trustworthy.
