Tax Day…Even Enough To Make A Liberal Want To Curb Spending
April 15, 2008
I make this comment in jest, as I am a self- identified democrat. However, as I just payed a huge sum of money to Uncle Sam, it made me wonder what they do with all of our money. :-) Any ideas???
Teenagers Bearing It All On Their Cell Phones
April 15, 2008
A recent Columbus Dispatch article really disturbed me when it was published this weekend. What kind of culture are we living in when our children are taking the devices that their parents buy/give to them and performing such lewd acts and then sending them to their friends and/or acquaintances? It is repulsive that our children are doing these things.
What might be even worse is the question of Where Are the Parents? I don’t have children, but if I did, I can guarantee that I would be going through my kids cell phone on a very regular basis to check to see who they are calling and what types of messages they are sending. But one thing I don’t understand is WHY do kids have to have a texting plan? They don’t need it! Isn’t the purpose of giving a child a cell phone to be able to call them if there is an emergency? Do you really need to be texting your kids messages when they should be focused on their studies in school? Should you really be spending your productive time at work texting with your kid that you many times you can’t find time to have dinner with in the evening?
The last thought I had was the sexist point of view of the article. I find it very hard to believe that this is mostly a girl phenomena. Come on….boys aren’t always angels….
Pessimistic About Retirement
April 15, 2008
According to an article in Reuters, Generation Xers are glum about their prospects of retiring anytime soon.
More than two-thirds of Americans aged 27 to 42 don’t think they will ever be able to stop working, according to a survey published jointly on Monday by Scottrade and BetterInvesting.
In contrast, 64 percent of respondents aged 55 to 64 said they could retire and not worry, even though this group is much closer to retirement age.
“The Gen X group is the most anxious about their finances,” said Chris Moloney, chief marketing officer at Scottrade.
Of the 1,000 respondents 18 and older polled in early January, 40 percent said they had saved less than $25,000 for retirement. For perspective, someone who envisions 20 years of retirement on about $50,000 a year would need to have $1 million stashed away.
I think that this shows that Gen Xers realize that the social security system will be nonexistent when it is our time to retire. The irritating part is that we are still paying into a system that will not serve us.
How do you feel about your finances for retirement? Are you saving?
